About Us

History

Opened in 1981 by Robbie and Carol Richards, The Fox Reformed is the only wine bar on Stoke Newington Church Street and was amongst the first businesses in what is now a thriving and well-known hub of culinary and imbibing activity. Robbie and Carol have run the business for 21 years, always extending a warm welcome and happy to tell an entertaining tale or two over a glass of fine wine.

The name of the Wine Bar evolved from its history.Originally named 'Fox's Wine Bar' the establishment enjoyed success for 5 years before it became a French restaurant called 'La Fin de la Chasse'. When it returned to its current format in 1992 of part wine bar, part restaurant, it was renamed The Fox Reformed.

Site of Edgar Allan Poe's School

The location of the wine bar has its own added history, Edgar Allan Poe attended a school that stood on this site, before he returned to America. This fact takes its place amongst Stoke Newington's exciting literary and dissident history.

The Ambience Today

The Wine Bar and Restaurant today has a unique ambience and offers good food, wine and a warm, friendly and cosy atmosphere. The many regulars and new customers enjoy a menu of AA Rosette food and a good selection of wine from around the globe, all at reasonable prices. An interesting selection of bottled beer is also available as well as Stella Artois on tap. All served by efficient and friendly staff and, of course, Robbie and Carol themselves.

You can enjoy a good meal with friends, an intimate dinner with a loved one, enjoy a game of backgammon, Scrabble or Boggle or sit at the bar and help to finish any crossword. Party bookings are also taken for part or all of the restaurant if space is available.

In 1992 a wine-tasting club was formed called FRILLS (The Fox Reformed Imbibing and Low Life Society). Monthly tastings are still held, click on the links above to learn more.
